Successful on the Outside, Struggling on the Inside?
EMDR Therapy for Anxiety, Perfectionism, and Feeling Stuck in Manchester, Connecticut
You’re capable. You’re responsible. You’re the person others count on. From the outside, it may look like you have everything together. But internally, it can feel very different.
Your mind rarely slows down. You replay conversations, second-guess decisions, and put pressure on yourself to get everything right. Even when things are going well, you may struggle to relax or feel satisfied.
At Stress Less Be You, I help adults explore the patterns that contribute to anxiety, perfectionism, and feeling stuck. My approach integrates EMDR therapy, somatic awareness, and other therapeutic techniques.
When Being a High Achiever Comes at a Cost
Being driven and conscientious can be strengths. But sometimes the same qualities that help you succeed can also leave you feeling overwhelmed.
· You overthink conversations and decisions long after they’re over.
· You have trouble relaxing because your mind is always on the next responsibility.
· You set high standards and focus on what you could have done better.
· You find it difficult to say no or disappoint others.
· You feel stuck despite your accomplishments.
Why Understanding Your Anxiety Isn’t Always Enough
You may know that mistakes do not define your worth, yet still feel intense self-criticism when something goes wrong. You may know you cannot control everyone’s opinion, yet feel anxious when someone is disappointed.
Sometimes these automatic reactions are connected to earlier experiences and beliefs. Therapy can help you understand those connections and practice responding differently.
How EMDR May Help
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy best established for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. It may also be useful when anxiety or negative self-beliefs are connected to distressing past experiences.
EMDR uses a structured process that can include bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping, to help reprocess distressing memories and their associated emotions, beliefs, and body sensations.
The goal is not to erase memories or eliminate ambition. It is to reduce the hold that distressing experiences may have on how you respond today. EMDR is not appropriate for everyone; we will assess whether it fits your needs.
When Anxiety Shows Up in Your Body
Stress may appear as a clenched jaw, tight shoulders, stomach discomfort, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, or a constant sense of urgency. Somatic therapy brings awareness to the physical sensations and nervous system responses that accompany emotions.
Together, we can explore how your body responds to stress and develop skills to notice and manage these patterns.
You Don’t Have to Give Up Your Ambition to Feel Better
You can care about your work without constantly questioning your worth. You can pursue meaningful goals while allowing yourself to rest. You can be responsible without feeling responsible for everything.
Therapy is not about changing who you are. It is about exploring the patterns that may be making your life harder than it needs to be.
What Getting Unstuck Can Look Like
· Making decisions with less second-guessing.
· Setting boundaries without overwhelming guilt.
· Responding to mistakes with more self-compassion.
· Feeling more present in relationships and personal life.
· Finding satisfaction in accomplishments instead of immediately focusing on what comes next.
These are possible goals, not guaranteed outcomes. Progress looks different for everyone.
My Approach
I’m Laurie Pels-Roulier, LMFT, LPC, an EMDR Certified Therapist. At Stress Less Be You, I integrate EMDR, somatic therapy, mindfulness, and other approaches based on each client’s needs. We may explore underlying beliefs, develop emotional regulation skills, and process experiences that continue to contribute to distress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can EMDR help with high-functioning anxiety?
“High-functioning anxiety” is a descriptive phrase, not a formal diagnosis. EMDR may be helpful when anxiety is connected to distressing experiences; other evidence-based treatments may be more appropriate for some anxiety conditions.
Will therapy make me less driven?
The goal is not to reduce your motivation. We can explore ways to pursue meaningful goals without relying so heavily on fear or self-criticism.
Do I need PTSD to consider EMDR?
Not necessarily. An individualized assessment helps determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your concerns.
What if I don’t know why I feel stuck?
You don’t need to know the cause before starting. We can begin with what you’re experiencing now.
